  Freer Street  Edinburgh

John Richards Landscape Architects have been commissioned
by Buredi, to prepare urban deign and landscape proposals for
their Freer Street development in Edinburgh, which has been
masterplanned by Allan Murray Architects.

The core of the design, is a new street linking the Union Canal
to the city centre. The street has been kept very simple. An
avenue of lime trees in large planters follows the gentle curve of
the buildings. This curve further emphasised in the design of the
ground surfaces. Here, granite in the form of setts and
horonized surfaces, has been integrated with Caithness paving,
to form a distinctive groundscape which relates to the character
of the materials used in the original streetscapes of the area.

To the east and west of the street private gardens, communal
timber decks and back court areas are softened by the
introduction of avenues of birch and rowan trees.
